Vintage Design
This is a Lounge or Club Chair in steam bent and flat birch ply, designed in 1936 by Marcel Breuer. There were originally two of these chairs designed by Breuer as part of the commission by Dorothea Ventris and made by P.E. Gane for her apartment in Berthold Lubetkin’s Tecton designed Highpoint building in Highgate London. This example comes from a number produced in the late 1990s by Chris McCourt’s Windmill Furniture for Isokon Plus after the original chairs were traced to descendants of Dorothea Ventris, who still had the chairs in the family’s possession. McCourt carefully measured the originals and made the windmill chairs completely faithfully to the originals, even having a single man hand upholster the sprung seats.
