Vintage Design
This impressive pair of beautiful chest of drawers were produced in Shanxi province and would originally have been used by a Chinese apothecary to store the various herbs, roots and other remedies used in Chinese medicine. Made from elm wood, they are still in their original rich dark brown finish that perfectly shows off the lovely grain and character of the wood beneath.
Each chest has twenty small drawers, with each drawer divided internally into two sections. Individual drawer fronts are labelled in cream with six characters to indicate the contents that would have been held inside each section. Some of the characters appear to have been added over earlier ones as the apothecary made changes to his inventory. Simple brass handles dress each drawer, creating an elementary and uniform style, encased with thick outer frames that continue down to form the legs of each chest ending in classic horse hoof feet.

The gorgeous dark finish and contrasting cream characters, give a lovely warm tone and feel to each chest and they would look wonderful placed in alcoves either side of a fireplace.
